Wireless Pentesting: Purpose and Importance

What is it Testing?

WiFi penetration testing assesses the security of an organization’s wireless network. The goal is to discover vulnerabilities that could allow unauthorized access or exploitation, such as weak encryption, misconfigured access points, or insecure authentication mechanisms. It tests the infrastructure of the wireless environment including potential risks like rogue access points and man-in-the-middle attacks.

Why is it important?

WiFi networks extend beyond the physical boundaries of an organization, making them more vulnerable to external attackers. Weak WiFi security can lead to unauthorized access to internal systems, data breaches, and network disruptions. Ensuring strong WiFi security protects sensitive information and limits an attacker’s ability to exploit wireless vulnerabilities as an entry point to the internal network.

Framework/Methodology

✅ WPA/WPA2/WPA3 protocol analysis

✅ Penetration Testing Execution Standard (PTES)

Examples of attacks/findings

✅ Weak encryption protocols (WEP, WPA with TKIP)

✅ Rogue Access Points

✅ Insecure WiFi Authentication
